Nothing has changed to dampen that quality in any way over the past year, and it remains as beautiful and as playable as ever. Trine 2 is an excellent game, let’s get that out of the way immediately. Trine 2 is one of the greatest video games ever made and this Complete Story version is the best way to play it so far, especially with the Switch's portability. Amadeus strategically sticks a wooden box to the ceiling The most substantial change is that Amadeus no longer has the ability to summon floating platforms but that simply makes the game more challenging which definitely isn't a bad thing. I'm glad that Frozenbyte took a chance with Trine 3 by having it take a leap into the 3D realm but the first 2 games are definitely very similar. However, the core set of abilities that each character has remains mostly unchanged. Don't get me wrong, it improves upon the original in almost every possible way. I really don't have much negative to say about Trine 2: Complete Story at all but one thing that stands out is that its core gameplay is very similar to the first game. On top of all that, this Complete Story version contains the Goblin Menace DLC and the Dwarven Caverns stage that was introduced in the Director's Cut edition. Trying to find and acquire everything will probably take about 20 hours. There are also loads of hidden treasure chests that contain collectible paintings and poems. Once you complete its campaign, you can replay stages to discover more experience pick-ups that allow you to level up and learn more passive and active skills. It'll take you around 10 hours to finish it which is very long for such a consistently engaging 2D adventure. Trine 2 is a huge game that stretches across plenty of lengthy levels. Trine 2 may just be the best looking and sounding 2D game that I've ever played. Plus, the audio is flawless complete with subtle moody orchestral pieces, fantastic voice acting, and gratifying effects that make solving puzzles and slaying enemies feel all the more visceral. In fact, each frame of gameplay can be hung in a museum it looks so darn good. Swapping between Amadeus, Zoya, and Pontius in order to solve puzzles, progress past tricky scenarios, and defeat enemies is super-satisfying stuff and being able to play cooperatively with up to 3 simultaneous local players is the icing on the cake.Īs you can tell from the screenshots, Trine 2: Complete Story is an absolutely gorgeous game with plenty of distinct environments that are impressively detailed. For the unfamiliar, each character has their own set of abilities such as being able to magically summon objects, shoot arrows and swing from ceilings, and hack and slash with a sword and shield. Thankfully, the awesome 2D puzzle platforming gameplay has carried over beautifully. Next, I had fun checking it out on PlayStation 4 with Trine 2: Complete Story and now, that version is finally available for Switch.
